Expatriate spouses sponsored on family residency visas in the UAE may take up employment without changing their sponsor if they obtain a no-objection certificate from their partner along with a Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation work permit and registered labour contract. Emirates 24|7 reported on October 28, 2026, that these three documents form the minimum requirement before an individual can begin work. The publication noted that the residence visa itself remains under the sponsoring spouse’s name throughout the employment period. Working without the MOHRE permit violates UAE Labour Law even if the residency visa is valid, a point emphasised in the guide.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation warned employers only days earlier that employing a worker without a valid permit carries fines ranging from 100,000 to 1 million dirhams under Article 60 of Federal Decree-Law No 33 of 2021 as amended. A Gulf News report on October 23, 2026, detailed how the ministry has intensified enforcement of these penalties which can be multiplied by the number of affected workers up to a 10 million dirham cap. MOHRE requires the employer to submit the application for the dependent work permit through its official portal before any work commences.

Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre data places the expatriate population at approximately 10 million people or 88 to 89 percent of the total UAE residents. Prior to regulatory reforms in 2019 a husband sponsored on his wife’s family visa could not legally work in the country while the reverse was permitted with a no-objection certificate according to earlier reporting. The updated framework eliminated that distinction allowing both directions under the same procedure and expanding workforce participation among family visa holders.

The employer must hold a valid establishment card and act through an authorised signatory when applying for the family-sponsored dependent permit according to MOHRE documentation. This route consumes no additional visa quota unlike standard employment visas that transfer sponsorship to the company. Processing typically concludes within two working days once all supporting documents are submitted and the permit remains valid for two years covering various contract types including full-time part-time and flexible arrangements.

Applicants need a valid Emirates ID a passport with at least six months’ validity and proof of medical fitness according to complementary guides published by residency consultants. The no-objection certificate from the sponsoring spouse must be submitted as part of the file in most cases. Public Authority for Civil Information statistics indicate that family-sponsored residence visas account for a substantial portion of active permits held by non-Emiratis reflecting the scale of households that rely on these employment pathways.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation continues to operate an online platform that allows both employers and workers to track permit applications in real time. Once issued the work permit enables the employee to sign the labour contract electronically through the same system. Should the employment end the permit is cancelled but the family residency visa can continue provided the original sponsorship conditions are maintained MOHRE procedures confirm.
