UAE employees following a standard Saturday-Sunday weekend stand to benefit from a nine-day stretch away from work between November 28 and December 6 by booking annual leave on November 30, December 1 and December 4. The alignment incorporates two weekends, four days in total, with the two paid National Day holidays on December 2 and 3, requiring just three days drawn from personal leave balances. Arabian Business reported that the arrangement has drawn attention as the final significant opportunity for extended time off in 2026.[[1]](https://www.arabianbusiness.com/abnews/uae-holidays-six-extra-days-off)

The official UAE government portal details that full-time private sector workers earn 30 calendar days of paid annual leave after one year of continuous service, with public holidays treated separately and not deducted from that entitlement. Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 governs the framework, allowing employers to set leave dates according to business needs while reaching agreement with staff. Employees with six to 12 months of service accrue two days of leave per month, the portal states.[[2]](https://u.ae/en/information-and-services/jobs/Sector-of-employment/employment-in-the-private-sector/Types-of-leaves)

Cabinet Resolution No. 27 of 2024 sets the National Day, also known as Eid Al Etihad, as a two-day paid holiday on December 2 and 3 for both public and private sectors across the country. The midweek placement of the holidays creates the bridge that, when combined with targeted annual leave, produces the extended break without exhausting a large portion of an employee’s allowance. Workers must secure advance approval from their employers, as company policies can influence final scheduling.[[3]](https://www.uaeexperthub.com/tools/uae-national-day-2026-holiday/)

Similar leave-extension tactics have appeared in past years for other fixed holidays that fall midweek, helping staff maximise rest while complying with statutory limits. The resolution permits shifting certain public holidays to adjacent weekdays to lengthen weekends, though this does not extend to National Day observances. Private sector schedules vary by employer, with some operating on different rest days that would alter the calculation.

Data from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation indicates the private sector workforce exceeds nine million people, many of whom rely on such planning to balance personal time with professional demands. The government portal notes that unused annual leave may be carried forward for up to half the annual entitlement or paid out upon contract termination at the basic wage rate. Employers are required to notify staff of scheduled leave at least 30 days in advance where possible.

Recent coverage has highlighted the popularity of these strategies among expatriate residents, who form the majority of the private sector labour force. Authorities encourage early submission of leave requests to avoid operational disruptions while allowing individuals to take full advantage of the calendar alignment. The approach underscores how statutory public holidays and annual leave provisions interact to support employee welfare within the UAE labour market.
