UAE Employees Can Secure Nine-Day December Break With Three Annual Leave Days

Arabian Business detailed a leave strategy on September 17, 2026, that allows UAE employees on a standard Saturday-Sunday weekend to create an extended break around National Day by requesting annual leave on specific weekdays. The publication explained that booking November 30, December 1 and December 4 as leave days produces nine consecutive days off from November 28 through December 6. Only three of those days draw from the employee’s annual leave balance while the remainder consist of two weekends and the two official public holidays. UAE government guidance lists December 2 and December 3 as paid public holidays for both public and private sector workers.

Private sector employees who have completed more than one year of service receive at least 30 days of fully paid annual leave per year under Federal Decree-Law 33/2021, according to a Khaleej Times review of labour regulations. Cabinet Resolution 27 of 2024 establishes the annual public holiday list that totals 12 days or 13 when Ramadan lasts a full 30 days, the same analysis found. Fixed holidays such as National Day on December 2 and 3 provide reliable anchors for leave planning whereas lunar dates for Eid observances remain subject to moon sighting confirmation. Strategic use of the minimum leave days can therefore stretch available time off without depleting the full entitlement.

The nine-day sequence begins with the weekend of Saturday November 28 and Sunday November 29, Arabian Business stated in its report. Annual leave then covers Monday November 30 and Tuesday December 1 before the Wednesday December 2 and Thursday December 3 National Day holidays take effect. Booking Friday December 4 as the third leave day finally connects to the weekend of Saturday December 5 and Sunday December 6. This arrangement yields six days that do not consume annual leave.

Shorter combinations also exist for employees who prefer less time away, the Arabian Business article continued. Taking only November 30 and December 1 as annual leave produces a six-day break from November 28 through December 3 by linking the two weekends with the public holidays. A single leave day can similarly generate a five-day break depending on exact placement around the December 2 start of the National Day period. Employer approval is required in all cases before any annual leave dates can be confirmed.

The UAE public holiday framework distinguishes between fixed Gregorian dates and moon-dependent Islamic occasions, a summary published by UAE Expert Hub noted. Holidays that fall on a regular weekend generate no substitute day under current rules while any public holiday falling inside an approved annual leave block is normally counted as part of that leave. Federal Decree-Law 33/2021 further specifies that working a public holiday entitles the employee to either a replacement rest day or premium pay of at least 150 percent of the basic wage for that shift. These provisions shape how workers and employers coordinate schedules throughout the year.

Human resources departments typically experience heightened leave requests in the final quarter as staff seek to maximise end-of-year breaks, according to patterns reported across multiple UAE labour analyses. The National Day period in early December frequently serves as one of the last major opportunities for such planning before the Gregorian New Year holiday on January 1. Employees are advised to consult their organisations’ internal policies which may offer terms more favourable than the statutory minimums on public holiday treatment during leave.
