The Arabian Gulf Cup Football Federation has thrown out Bahrain’s complaint concerning Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo’s participation in the sides’ Group B clash, multiple outlets including Goal.com reported. Bahrain argued that Madibo remained suspended from a five-match FIFA ban handed down during the 2026 World Cup. The federation’s decision rested solely on the protest arriving after the two-hour post-match window required under Article 19/1 of the Disciplinary Regulations rather than on any eligibility assessment.

Qatar defeated Bahrain 2-0 in the September 24 encounter at Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium in Jeddah, the Peninsula Qatar stated. Boualem Khoukhi opened the scoring in the 61st minute while Hassan Al Haydos converted a stoppage-time penalty after Ahmed Fathi had been sent off. The result positioned Qatar second in the group behind the UAE, which had routed Yemen 4-0 earlier that evening.

FIFA imposed the suspension on Madibo after his red card for a violent challenge on Canada’s Ismael Kone in the World Cup group stage, Goal.com detailed. Qatar subsequently faced only Bosnia and Herzegovina before exiting the tournament and entering the Gulf Cup without further fixtures. The Qatar Football Association had obtained explicit clearance from FIFA prior to the regional event and forwarded that documentation to the Gulf federation, which granted its approval.

Abu Dhabi Sports channels, cited by Goal.com, noted the procedural basis for dismissal came as a surprise given the underlying eligibility debate. The ruling preserves Qatar’s three points and leaves Bahrain seeking its first tournament victory against the UAE on September 28. A successful protest would have awarded the match to Bahrain and dramatically reordered the standings.

The 27th Arabian Gulf Cup is staged across Saudi venues from September 23 to October 6, Sports Mole reported in its preview coverage. Bahrain opened the tournament as defending champions after claiming the title in the previous edition. The two sides have contested 19 prior Gulf Cup matches, recording five wins apiece and nine draws, according to an assessment published by Youm7.

Qatar next faces Yemen while Bahrain meets the UAE in the second round of group fixtures, the Peninsula Qatar added. Both federations had confirmed Madibo’s status with the governing bodies before the tournament began. The episode highlights the emphasis placed on timely procedural compliance within GCC football regulations.
