Iran’s judiciary head Ayatollah Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei called on BRICS nations to condemn violations of Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in line with international law and the UN Charter. The statement came during the BRICS Chief Justices’ Forum hosted by India’s Supreme Court from September 4 to 6, where Mohseni-Ejei also pushed for the application of universal jurisdiction to prosecute those responsible for war crimes against Iran. ETV Bharat reported that the judiciary chief framed these appeals as essential to upholding a global order where no power stands above the law.

Mohseni-Ejei told the gathering that the rule of law forms a critical foundation for order, justice and progress in every society, according to the Borna News Agency. He referenced brutal aggression by the United States and Israel over the past year, stating that the Iranian people had paid a heavy price for their independence. The Iranian official asked BRICS members whether future generations would question which side of history they had chosen, pressing them to take concrete measures against further unlawful actions.

On the sidelines of the forum, Mohseni-Ejei held talks with senior judicial officials from China, Russia and Belarus to strengthen legal cooperation, the Tehran Times reported. He emphasised expanding ties with Beijing through greater exchanges of legal expertise and fuller use of existing memoranda of understanding. Russia’s Supreme Court head Igor Krasnov praised Iran’s resilience against external pressure and reaffirmed Moscow’s support, highlighting shared challenges from sanctions.

The forum coincided with Iran’s ongoing diplomatic drive to build solidarity within BRICS amid its conflict with the United States. An Al Jazeera dispatch from May 2026 outlined how earlier BRICS foreign ministers meetings in New Delhi had ended without a common position on the war, noting only differing views among members. Iran’s judiciary chief raised concerns over human rights, sovereignty violations, humanitarian crises and civilian displacement during the sessions, as covered by LiveLaw.

BRICS represents approximately 45 percent of the global population and 40 percent of world GDP, statistics highlighted by ETV Bharat in its coverage of Iran’s outreach. The group’s leaders summit is scheduled for September 12 and 13 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, with attendance expected from presidents including Russia’s Vladimir Putin, China’s Xi Jinping and Iran’s Masoud Pezeshkian. India holds the rotating presidency this year, overseeing discussions that encompass economic cooperation and international disputes.

Iran faces hurdles in securing unified BRICS backing, particularly from the United Arab Emirates, whose chief justice also participated in the forum. A New York Times analysis from March 2026 described how the bloc has shown divisions over the Iran conflict, with some members avoiding explicit alignment against the United States and Israel. Despite these challenges, Iranian officials continue to view BRICS as a platform for advancing multipolarity and resisting unilateral pressures.
