Bahrain Labour Law Specifies Full Medical Coverage for Work-Related Injuries

Bahrain’s labour law requires employers to report work-related injuries promptly while assuming the full financial responsibility for the injured worker’s recovery, according to a report published on October 29, 2026. The rules, detailed under Article 87, grant the worker the right to treatment at a government medical facility or another appropriate institution selected by the employer. Employers must cover all associated expenses, including medicines, transportation to and from treatment centres, rehabilitation services and any equipment or aids prescribed by the attending physician. No portion of these costs may be shifted to the worker when the injury is connected to employment duties.

The Ministry of Labor operates a dedicated service for filing reports of occupational accidents with no associated fees, its guidelines show. Reporting must take place within 24 hours for deaths or serious injuries and within 15 days for other incidents that result in time away from work. Required documentation includes a copy of the injured worker’s valid identification, the employment contract and the medical report detailing the incident. Once submitted, an investigation unit within the ministry’s occupational safety department reviews the case and prepares a technical assessment for relevant authorities.

Mandatory insurance under the General Organisation for Social Insurance covers the work injury branch with employers contributing 3 percent of each worker’s gross salary and bearing the full amount, a 2026 occupational health guide from SmartQHSE stated. This mechanism supports medical treatment, temporary disability payments during recovery and longer-term benefits where applicable. The Social Insurance Organization recorded 200 work accidents including four deaths from January through August 2026, according to figures highlighted at a trade union workshop and reported by News of Bahrain.

Compensation for permanent outcomes depends on a medical assessment of disability percentage conducted after the worker’s condition has stabilised. Cases resulting in 1 to 29 percent disability receive a one-time payment while those at 30 percent or above qualify for a monthly pension, the workshop presentation outlined. Assessment timelines range from six months to two years depending on injury complexity, with head or nerve-related cases often requiring the longer period before a final determination.

Employers are prohibited from ending an injured worker’s contract during the recovery phase, ensuring job protection alongside the medical and financial provisions. The framework applies to both Bahraini and expatriate workers in the private sector under the Labour Law for the Private Sector No. 36 of 2012. Additional procedures allow for authenticated reports from police, public prosecution or other entities when serious incidents occur.

The Ministry of Labor directs all such reports to its occupational safety department via in-person submission or email, its service description confirms. This structured approach facilitates timely investigations and ensures that injured workers access entitled benefits without interruption. Recent data underscores the scale of workplace incidents, reinforcing the importance of compliance with these established reporting and compensation mechanisms.
