Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has implemented streamlined departure procedures designed to assist Umrah pilgrims in leaving the kingdom efficiently. Gulf News reported on March 23, 2026, that the measures involve coordination with airlines and Umrah companies to verify departure schedules and reduce processing delays. The ministry emphasized the importance of pilgrims adhering to their visa validity periods during this process. Officials have deployed field staff and technological tools to support these efforts across key locations.

The Ministry of Interior has specified the consequences for failing to depart by the April 18, 2026, deadline. According to Saudi Press Agency reports, overstayers face a maximum fine of 50,000 Saudi riyals, up to six months in prison and mandatory deportation. These penalties apply to expatriates and pilgrims alike who exceed the permitted stay on Umrah visas. The warnings form part of ongoing campaigns to regulate temporary residency during religious seasons.

Transporting, employing or sheltering individuals who overstay their Umrah visas is also prohibited under Ministry of Interior rules. Any such actions will result in legal violations and corresponding sanctions, the ministry has stated. Umrah service providers must report known overstayers to avoid incurring their own financial penalties for non-compliance. This requirement places responsibility on operators to assist in enforcement.

The General Authority for Statistics recorded more than 15 million Umrah performers in the first quarter of 2025, demonstrating the substantial volume of visitors the procedures must accommodate. Of these, international pilgrims accounted for over 6.5 million, reflecting a 10.7 percent rise from the previous year. Males comprised 60.5 percent of the total while Saudis made up 24 percent, per the authority’s bulletin.

Hajj and Umrah service companies risk fines of up to 100,000 Saudi riyals if they neglect to notify authorities about overstaying pilgrims, a Gulf Business article indicated. The crackdown aims to ensure full cooperation from the private sector involved in pilgrimage services. Such measures have been highlighted in multiple official communications throughout the year.

The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah continues to issue guidelines for organizing departures and facilitating travel with efficiency. Coordination with relevant entities remains central to these operations as the April deadline approaches. Pilgrims are urged to confirm their plans in line with the published regulations.
