Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the car made a U-turn before striking independent MP Helen Haines as she stood at the boot of her own vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria. Witnesses told officials the driver then reversed and rammed her a second time before a local barber detained the suspect at the scene. Victoria Police reported that a knife was recovered from inside the white Toyota Land Cruiser involved in the October 19 incident. The 65-year-old lawmaker was airlifted to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery.

Australian media outlets reported that Haines had one leg amputated during the overnight operation and that surgeons were attempting to save the other while she remained in critical condition. The independent member for the rural seat of Indi has built a reputation as an anti-corruption advocate since entering parliament. According to a joint statement from federal and state authorities the investigation is being led by Victoria Police with support from the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation.

A 43-year-old man from the nearby town of Tarrawingee has been named in multiple outlets as Brendan Nugent, an environmental campaigner known locally for anti-logging activism. He was arrested after bystanders intervened and has not yet been formally charged. The Australian Federal Police said officers are considering offences including causing harm to a Commonwealth public official, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke cited official figures showing reports of threatening or harassing behaviour directed at politicians rose from 951 to 1,067 over the past year. Burke added that the attack appeared to be an isolated incident with no known links to broader threats. AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett stated that the joint counter-terrorism team was treating the matter with the highest priority while emphasising there were no connected risks to other officials.

Local barber Ricky Jefferies, who helped restrain the driver until police arrived, told reporters he acted because he had no choice when he saw the vehicle strike Haines twice. Jefferies described the response from people at the scene as evidence of the best of the Australian character emerging at the worst of times. Tributes including flowers and messages of support have appeared outside Haines’ constituency office on Murphy Street since the attack.

Albanese told national broadcaster ABC that it was too early to determine a motive but pointed to a broader rise in hostility toward politicians fuelled by social media. The prime minister praised Haines for her dedication to public service and transparency in politics. Reuters noted that while political violence remains extremely rare in Australia authorities have tracked a steady increase in threats against elected representatives in recent years.
