Bahrain Labour Law Designates Friday as Default Rest Day with Employer Flexibility

Bahrain’s labour law establishes Friday as the default weekly rest day for all workers in the kingdom, a detail underscored in a Legit.ng article published October 17, 2026. Under the legislation, every employee is entitled to at least 24 consecutive hours of rest each week. The law specifically safeguards the time allocated for Friday prayers for Muslim workers. This religious consideration remains mandatory regardless of any schedule adjustments.

Employers may change the weekly rest day for some of their staff to accommodate business needs that require seven-day operations. However, such changes must not interfere with the observance of Friday prayer times, according to the provisions detailed in the report. The flexibility allows rotation of rest days among teams in industries such as manufacturing, retail and hospitality. This approach ensures that individual workers still receive their full entitled rest period within each seven-day cycle.

Bahrain Labour Law No. 36 of 2012, which contains these rules in its Article 57, also addresses scenarios where workers are required to work on their rest day. In those cases, the employee has the choice of receiving 150 percent of normal wages for the hours worked or taking a compensatory rest day, the law states. No worker can be scheduled for rest day duty more than two consecutive weeks without providing written consent. These measures aim to balance employer requirements with employee protections.

The country’s standard working schedule runs Sunday through Thursday, making Friday and Saturday the typical weekend, according to regional labour market overviews. Maximum regular working time is capped at eight hours daily and 48 hours weekly, with further reductions applied during the month of Ramadan for Muslim staff. Labour compliance assessments place these limits as central to preventing overwork in the Gulf economy.

Similar rest day regulations exist across neighbouring GCC countries, where Friday often serves as the primary day of rest due to its religious significance. Reports on Gulf labour practices indicate that such policies help support both workforce welfare and operational continuity in diverse economic sectors. Bahrain’s rules form part of a comprehensive labour framework that includes provisions for annual leave, sick leave and overtime compensation.

The Legit.ng report noted that the regulation enables businesses to maintain productivity without compromising legal standards for worker rest. By setting clear conditions for any deviation from the Friday rest day, the law provides a structured approach to scheduling. Enforcement falls under the purview of Bahrain’s labour authorities, which monitor compliance across public and private entities.
