Federal Reserve figures placed overall U.S. firm AI adoption at 18 percent by the end of 2025 while professional services and financial sectors stood out with uptake levels of approximately 33 percent and 30 percent. The central bank analysis of Census Bureau business survey data indicated that generative AI use for work purposes climbed even higher in those areas to 62 percent and 63 percent. Professional services that encompass law firms have concentrated AI deployment in cognitive and analytical tasks that align with legal research, compliance reviews and contract evaluation.

A 2026 Global AI in Financial Services Report issued by the University of Cambridge Judge Business School found that 81 percent of surveyed financial services firms have adopted AI at some level. Forty percent of industry respondents reported advanced adoption at scaling or transforming stages, more than double the rate among regulators. Fintech companies led traditional incumbents in advanced AI uptake by 47 percent to 30 percent according to the Cambridge assessment.

The IBM AI in Action report that surveyed 2,000 organizations globally distinguished AI leaders, defined as the top 15 percent of performers, as those that follow dedicated roadmaps. Eighty-five percent of those leaders pursued structured approaches instead of opportunistic ones, the report showed. Such organizations achieved clearer differentiation in value realized from AI investments compared with peers that lacked formal strategies.

RSM’s Middle Market AI Survey determined that 87 percent of financial services organizations have integrated AI at least partially into operations with 41 percent reporting full integration across core processes. Sixty-nine percent of those respondents deployed generative AI tools while 60 percent used predictive AI and 51 percent applied agentic AI. Tax functions within financial services recorded particularly strong uptake with 88 percent of departments employing AI tools either formally or informally.

Earlier industry surveys had already signaled rising expectations for AI deployment in risk management, trading and compliance functions within financial institutions. Those assessments noted cost and specialist skills shortages as primary barriers even as organizations projected substantial changes to job roles over the coming years. Professional services adoption has continued to build on that foundation with law firms applying AI to streamline due diligence and regulatory monitoring.

University of Cambridge researchers observed that only 14 percent of industry respondents viewed AI as fully transformational to organizational strategy despite the high adoption levels. The gap pointed to execution challenges in integrating AI into broader business models and competitive positioning. Regulators lagged with just 20 percent reporting advanced adoption though 33 percent were piloting AI systems.
