The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi took enforcement action against the company after it caused damage to a sensitive natural habitat through multiple violations. The agency cited the firm’s failure to comply with decisions that had ordered a halt to operations in the affected area. Officials determined that the breaches warranted the full administrative penalty under environmental regulations.

Al Barqa formations consist of rare flat-topped desert hills that developed naturally over millions of years and constitute a key element of Abu Dhabi’s desert landscape, according to the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi. These structures support associated wildlife habitats that form part of the emirate’s natural heritage. The agency has emphasised the need to shield such landmarks from activities that could alter their original state.

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi warned that the formations are highly sensitive to human interference, including vehicle traffic and other encroachments. Damage inflicted in this manner cannot be repaired or restored, the agency stated in its announcement. This irreversibility underscores the importance of preventive measures at such sites across the emirate.

Gulf News reported a comparable case in October 2024 in which the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi issued fines totalling Dh165,000 to individuals who entered the Al Wathba nature reserve without permits and disturbed critical habitats. That action similarly targeted unauthorised activities threatening fragile desert ecosystems. The pattern reflects the agency’s consistent approach to documented violations in protected zones.

A federal Cultural Heritage Law approved in July 2026 established penalties of up to 10 years imprisonment and Dh10 million fines for serious offences against natural heritage, Khaleej Times reported at the time. The legislation covers deliberate damage to such sites among 24 specified violations. The current administrative fine operates under complementary environmental enforcement mechanisms that predate the new statute.

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi said its inspection teams will maintain regular visits throughout the emirate to identify violations and confirm adherence to issued enforcement orders. These patrols form part of broader initiatives to preserve sensitive ecosystems and irreplaceable desert landmarks. The agency has indicated that similar actions will continue against non-compliant entities.
