The UAE government launched coordinated mosquito control measures after recent rainfall created widespread stagnant water that raised mosquito breeding risks, Gulf Today reported on March 29, 2026. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment confirmed the rollout of intensified interventions aimed at protecting public health from associated diseases. Municipal teams and inspectors targeted breeding sites as part of a multi-pronged strategy that combined immediate action with long-term prevention.

Measures deployed included pesticide spraying, fogging operations, larval control programmes and the drainage of stagnant water, according to the ministry. Public-awareness campaigns formed an integral component by encouraging residents to reduce breeding environments at the household level. These efforts came in response to observed rises in insect activity that followed the precipitation events across the country.

Eliminating stagnant water stood as the primary legal and operational priority for the campaign, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment stated. Residents faced legal requirements to comply with preventive guidelines such as emptying uncovered containers, ensuring proper drainage and maintaining sanitation around their properties. Coordination with local authorities during scheduled inspections and spraying activities also formed part of the mandated responsibilities.

Comparable campaigns followed the UAE’s heaviest recorded rainfall in April 2024, which triggered a surge in dengue cases nationwide, according to a Harvard School of Public Health analysis. A one-year mosquito survey in Dubai after that outbreak collected 1,598 Aedes aegypti specimens and detected dengue virus in five pools. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention placed the minimum infection rate at 3.1 per 1,000 mosquitoes.

Globally more than 500,000 dengue cases had been reported by March 23, 2026, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reported. The UAE’s latest measures align with ongoing regional vigilance against vector-borne illnesses that can spread rapidly in warm climates with standing water. The ministry highlighted that resident participation in eliminating breeding sites played a critical role in the overall effectiveness of control programmes.

The directives advised additional preventive actions including proper waste disposal, trimming of vegetation and use of mosquito-repelling plants where appropriate, Gulf Today reported. Installation of window screens and electric insect traps received recommendation to limit entry into homes. These steps supplemented the governmental spraying and larval treatment operations that continued in affected areas.
