Chief Justice Surya Kant Engages BRICS Judicial Leaders In Bilateral Talks At New Delhi Forum

A Live Law report detailed how Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant engaged in bilateral talks with judicial leaders from BRICS+ countries during the 11th BRICS+ Legal Forum. Senior legal delegations from the participating jurisdictions held consultations at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi one day before the formal inauguration. These discussions formed part of efforts to strengthen institutional ties among the member nations’ judiciaries.

Justice Surya Kant proposed a BRICS+ Judicial Fellowship during the forum according to the Live Law account. The initiative would allow career jurists to spend short periods observing courts in other member countries. Such exchanges aim to promote direct familiarity with varied legal systems and practices across the group.

The Chief Justice additionally advocated for a shared jurisprudence repository drawing on India’s experience with digitised case law Live Law reported. This platform would permit courts in BRICS+ nations to consult judgments from other jurisdictions on comparable legal issues. Justice Surya Kant introduced the term “Nyay Setu” to describe a bridge linking different legal traditions and fostering sustained institutional trust.

A 60-member international delegation visited the Supreme Court of India ahead of the forum’s start Live Law stated. Delegates toured the National Judicial Museum and Archive along with other court facilities before an interaction with Justice Surya Kant. The inaugural plenary session focused on rule of law in a multipolar world and building legal capacity for economic resilience.

The Bar Association of India hosted the 11th BRICS+ Legal Forum under the theme of rule of law frameworks and institutional capacity building for economic resilience innovation and sustainability according to Live Law. The programme included discussions on climate finance developmental justice arbitration artificial intelligence governance and international investment law. The closing session is expected to adopt a declaration and form working groups to guide the next forum.

This gathering builds on prior judicial cooperation steps including a June 2026 memorandum of understanding between the Supreme Courts of India and Russia that Live Law has documented. That agreement covered exchanges between judicial academies joint training research collaboration and sharing of best practices. Justice Surya Kant met a German judicial delegation days after the BRICS+ forum to explore further cooperation in technology artificial intelligence mediation and legal education Live Law reported.
