UAE Ministry Directs Recall of Popular Brand Cups Over Lead Contamination

The UAE Ministry of Economy’s Consumer Protection Department directed the recall of cups belonging to a popular consumer brand following laboratory tests that revealed lead contamination exceeding permissible limits, according to Arabian Business on April 22, 2026. This enforcement falls under the UAE product safety framework designed to safeguard public health from hazardous items. Retailers and distributors are obligated to withdraw the products from shelves without delay and suspend all related sales activities. The ministry further requires coordination for appropriate disposal procedures to ensure the items do not re-enter the market.

Consumers have been urged to cease using the cups and to return them for appropriate remedies, the report added. Federal Law No. 10 of 2018 on Product Safety explicitly prohibits the placement of unsafe products on the market, as outlined on the UAE legislation portal. Suppliers bear responsibility for maintaining product safety throughout the supply chain under this statute. The law mandates immediate corrective measures once risks are identified through testing or complaints.

A guide to product liability in the UAE noted that violations of suppliers’ recall obligations may result in administrative fines ranging from AED 250,000 to AED 1,000,000. The framework also empowers authorities to enforce notification and corrective actions across all involved parties in the supply chain. Such interventions address chemical contaminants that can affect consumer goods including those used for food or drink.

Ministry of Economy and Tourism figures show the total number of consumer complaints decreased from 4,718 in 2021 to 2,943 in 2023. This trend aligns with intensified market surveillance, including one campaign that involved 8,168 inspections resulting in 729 warnings and 216 fines, according to a March 2026 government update. The ministry operates a dedicated online section for tracking and announcing recalls that facilitates engagement by businesses and the public alike.

Local media reported in 2024 that the ministry introduced a service allowing consumers to request recalls of defective or hazardous goods directly. The initiative expands avenues for public input into product safety oversight beyond traditional complaint channels. Officials continue to promote awareness of these mechanisms to strengthen overall compliance with established standards across the consumer market.
